Ready-to-Use Infant Formula: How to Prepare and Store

Just like the name says, this product is used right out of the container.

  • Ready-to-use (also called ready-to-feed) formula is sterile and safe for your baby as is.
  • Ready-to-use formula comes in single use bottles as well as larger containers for multiple feedings.
  • Always follow the manufacturer’s directions on the label.
  • It is very important that your hands and the place where you prepare the bottles are clean and that feeding equipment is sterilized.
  • Never add extra water to make the formula thinner as this is dangerous for your baby.
  • Never mix any other kind of food, drink or type of formula in your baby’s bottle. Adding cereal to your baby’s bottle won’t help him sleep and can cause choking.
  • Bottles prepared ahead of time need to be covered and stored in the refrigerator. Throw them out if you haven’t used them within 48 hours.

How to use and store

  • Your baby should start a new bottle at each feeding.
  • After feeding begins, use the formula within one hour or discard.
  • After each feeding, throw away any unused formula. Never reuse, reheat or put it in the fridge for later use.
  • If using formula that comes in container with more than one serving in it
    • once opened, cover the container and store it in the refrigerator
    • use the entire bottle of formula within 48 hours.
    • throw out any unused formula that has been open for over 48 hours.

Warming the bottle before feeding

  • Most babies like to drink their formula at room temperature.
  • You can warm the bottle by placing it in a bowl of warm water.
  • Never warm bottles in a microwave oven as it causes hot spots and can burn your baby’s mouth.
  • Check the temperature of the formula by placing some drops on the inside of your wrist.
